The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party

A play produced and directed by Maureen Pepper.

Actingworks invited children to a fun and exciting afternoon on the 6th of April, bringing to life Lewis Carroll’s timeless Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland at the ‘The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party’; an interactive play that captured imaginations with a host of iconic characters and moments from the classic tale.

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland has continued to enchant audiences since the release of the original book back in 1865. Written by a mathematician named Charles Lutwidge Dodgson using his pen name Lewis Carroll, much of the story was created on the spot as he told it to an audience of children on a leisurely boat trip. A member of that first audience, a friend’s daughter named Alice Liddell, would become immortalised as the inspiration for the main character of the tale: Alice.

Carroll’s story is as enthralling today as it was on that first telling, capturing imaginations the world over with its surreal and fantastical cast of memorable characters and happenings. His legacy survives as Alice’s adventures have been retold and re-imagined countless times; Disney’s 1951 film and the Tim Burton movies, being two of the most well-known examples, have introduced the classic to new generations and it was with this same spirit that Actingworks’ recreated Carroll’s world for an afternoon.

This bringing-to-life of Carroll’s adventures and characters gave the children a fun and exciting experience, with games and activities including ‘Pin The Smile on the Cheshire Cat’, and answering riddles at the Mad Hatter’s tea party. It was a memorable event for everybody involved, with Alice’s journey down the rabbit hole once more capturing young imaginations.
